The Sixth Ancestor Zen Center is a place of spiritual practice for those who wish to follow a Path of awakening. We are located in N. Oakland CA, near Piedmont Ave. Please call the number below for our address and directions.

We primarily practice in the Buddhist tradition of Ganhwa Seon, as taught by the great Seon (zen) masters of Korea.  The original founder of this tradition of Seon practice was the Chinese Sixth Ancestor, the great Ch’an master Huineng.

We follow the teaching traditions of Zen Master KuSan Sunim (see “The Way of Korean Zen” by Martine Batchelor) and his teacher, Zen Master HyoBong Sunim, both past great masters of our Zen Teacher’s home monastery, Songgwangsa, in South Korea (see “The Zen Monastic Experience” by Robert Buswell). We also practice according to the teachings of Ven. Hyunoong Sunim.

Our Zen Teacher Jaguang Sunim studied under Zen Master Kusan Sunim in Songgwangsa Monastery for eight years and is now opening this new zen center in Oakland CA.

The teachings of all great masters of non-dual traditions, both ancient and modern, are honored here, as the Path to awakening includes many paths, all based on Compassion, Love and Wisdom.

Dietary Programs & Ancient Breathing/Energy Practices

As part of our spiritual path we include ancient traditional Korean and Taoist practices to restore and maintain a healthy body, as our body is the vehicle via which we practice to awaken. It is important to prepare the body by opening the energy meridians, and establishing internal balance — physically, mentally and emotionally — to create an open, healthy and stable foundation for a spiritual practice. The healthier you are on all levels, the deeper your practice experience can become.

When we open our energy meridians, establish good energy circulation and learn to ground our energies, our mind will also become more grounded. In the process we learn skills that allow us to settle our mind and energies at will. This not only prepares the body/mind for deeper practice

Ven. Hyunoong Sunim and Jaguang Sunim both ordained and trained in Songgwangsa Monastery in South Korea. They studied under the renowned Korean Zen Master KuSan Sunim.

Jaguang Sunim is a Zen meditation teacher and Holistic Health Practitioner dedicated to guiding others in their spiritual growth and achieving optimum health. She has over 35 years of experience in the study and practice of traditional Korean Zen.

We invite you to listen to our free teachings on Zen practice and the Path of Awareness. Your donations to help support these teachings are appreciated.

General membership includes weekly zen sittings and Dharma talks.

We practice Zen in order to experience true joy and freedom – freedom from the multitude of things that make us unhappy. Freedom from the endless obstacles set up by our relentless thinking.
